I Built an Agency from a Garage Floor

Ryan Cunningham - I Built an Agency from a Garage Floor

The first time I lost everything, I walked out of immigration detention with one phone number in my head.

No business. No money. Nowhere to live. I slept on my accountant’s sofa by night and lived in his garage by day. My only asset was an HP Pavilion PC. My only hope was an internet connection.

This is not a romantic startup story. This is the brutal reality of rebuilding from zero, and the lessons I carry into every AI system I build today.

Before we dive in - here is your free stuff

The $20 Flash Banner

When you have nothing, you cannot afford to be precious about what you sell. You just need cash flow.

I started selling Flash banners on eBay for $20 a pop. Grueling, low-margin work. But it taught me the most important lesson in business: find a market with immediate pain and offer a direct solution. People needed banners for their websites. I knew how to make them quickly. That was the entire business model.

That $20 banner led to a conversation. That conversation led to a $500 website build. That website build led to a realization that changed my entire career trajectory.

The SEO Epiphany

I realized something fundamental while sitting on that garage floor. Anyone can build a website. The technical execution of putting HTML on a server is a commodity. You can hire anyone in the world to do it for $10 an hour.

Getting that website found by people with money in their pockets? That is the real skill.

I fell in love with Search Engine Optimization right there. I stopped selling websites and started selling visibility. I built The Construct Media, a digital agency focused entirely on driving traffic and revenue for small businesses. We did not build digital brochures. We built lead generation engines.

The difference sounds subtle. It is not. A brochure tells people who you are. A lead generation engine brings you qualified buyers every single day without you lifting a finger.

What the Garage Taught Me About AI

Fast forward to today. I build AI operating systems for national e-commerce brands. The tools are completely different. The speed is completely different. But the architecture of solving a problem is exactly the same as it was on that garage floor.

Find the immediate pain. In SEO, it was visibility. In AI, it is the gap between the tools people are paying for and the results they are actually getting.

Build a system to solve it. In SEO, it was keyword research frameworks and content calendars. In AI, it is data pipelines, knowledge bases, and deterministic agent workflows.

Execute relentlessly. No shortcuts. No magic prompts. Just the work.

The people who fail with AI are the same people who failed with SEO in 2005. They buy the tool, skip the strategy, and wonder why nothing is happening. The tool is never the answer. The system is the answer.

The 4-Week Architecture of Rebuilding

If you had to start over tomorrow, here is the exact sequence I would follow. I have seen this work for founders who lost everything, for corporate refugees who got laid off, and for small business owners who need to pivot fast.

Week 1

The Skill Audit

What can you sell today? Not in 6 months. This week. Be specific. "Marketing consulting" is not a skill. "Google Ads copy for HVAC companies" is a skill.

Week 2

The Revenue Map

Identify 50 specific people who need what you just described. Reach out to all 50 with one sentence about the pain you solve. No pitch decks. No proposals.

Week 3

The AI Foundation

Once you have your first client, build your knowledge base. Document your process. Feed your wins and losses into an AI system. This is how you scale without burning out.

Week 4

The System

Now you build the machine. Automated outreach. AI-assisted delivery. A content engine that keeps you visible while you do the work. This is where most people want to start. It is actually where you finish.

The 3 Prompts That Compress Weeks Into Hours

These are the exact prompts I use when I need to rebuild fast. Copy them directly into Claude or ChatGPT. The output is only as good as the context you give it, so fill in the brackets with real specifics.

The Rebuild Prompt Pack

Prompt 1 - The Service Definer
I have [X] years of experience in [your industry]. I need to generate immediate cash flow. I have no team and no budget. Give me 5 highly specific, low-overhead services I can sell today for under $1,000. For each one, tell me exactly who to pitch them to and what the one-sentence value proposition is. Be direct. No fluff.
Prompt 2 - The Cold Pitch Writer
Write a 3-sentence cold outreach message pitching [specific service] to [specific target audience]. The first sentence must reference a specific pain point they are experiencing right now. Do not use any marketing jargon. The tone must be direct, conversational, and anti-BS. End with one simple question, not a call to action.
Prompt 3 - The 30-Day Revenue Roadmap
I am starting a [service type] business from zero today. I have [your specific skills] and [your available hours per week]. Map out a day-by-day 30-day action plan focused ONLY on revenue-generating activities. Ignore branding, logos, and websites for now. Focus entirely on outreach, follow-up, and delivery. Be specific about what I do on Day 1, Day 7, Day 14, Day 21, and Day 30.

Free Gift: The Rebuild From Zero Action Plan

I built a Google Sheet to help you run this exact process. It is not a template. It is a working tool with pre-built formulas, real examples from my own rebuild, and the three prompts above already formatted and ready to copy.
